We have entered the year of The Hermit! What does it mean? Let’s get into it!
Each year, there is a tarot card based off what year we are in with Numerology. The number for the year 2025 is 9 (2+0+2+5=9). Card 9 in tarot is The Hermit. Last year’s number for 2024 (2+0+2+4) was 8, which was Strength. Tarot also ties to astrology, and Virgo (whose planetary ruler is Mercury) is associated with The Hermit. If you have significant Virgo placements in your birth chart, you may find a deeper connection to this card. Now, let’s dive in further!
Arriving at The Hermit in 2025 feels like such a tanc (there are no coincidences). It feels like we’re on the precipice of something, and retreating and reflecting inward, practicing and embodying the lessons of The Hermit feels like the way to prepare and get through this year. There are a lot of big astrological events happening in 2025, and just by paying attention to the outer world and the news, there are shake ups everywhere. It just feels like…a lot. The Hermit reminds us to seek the light within, to guide ourselves through uncertainty and to serve as a beacon of light and hope for others.

The rhythms of nature also serve as a lesson to start this year off. We begin 2025 in Capricorn season, and I just want to touch on the pressure January brings before we dive deeper into The Hermit. Due to Capricorn’s very driven nature, and being so good at planning, practicality and intentionality, it can be easy to confuse “leaning into Capricorn energy” with the hustle and grind of late-stage capitalism. I want to remind you with The Hermit and with the cycles of nature, the beginning of the year is a time for reflection. There is no need to rush into 2025, hitting the ground running. Instead, pause. This time of year is made for reflection, introspection and internal exploration. Lean into daydreaming, brainstorming and planning. Capricorn, The Hermit and nature’s natural cycles are here to support you with intentions you actually want to align with vs the toxicity social media influencers are marketing to you. It’s time to figure out what and where your values are. Reject the scarcity and urgency that capitalism loves to “inspire”. Allow yourself permission to emerge back into life at a pace that feels in alignment with you.
Starting 2025 with this practice, with this affirmation is how we begin our work with The Hermit. The number 9 represents near completion, wisdom and spiritual growth, encouraging us to embrace quiet moments and deep reflection. The Hermit inspires just that — it’s all about honoring the ancient one and the deep wisdom that innately exists within us all.
Part of working with The Hermit is having radical self-acceptance about going within. Welcoming and encouraging this quietude — a shutting off of the noise and information. I truly think this year is about less. Less consumption, especially less social media doom scrolling and marketing. Being truly cognizant of what we’re consuming. If you’re a creative and feeling blocked, this year about consuming less of others to allow your own inner voice and artistry to come alive, instead of remaining suppressed due to discouragement and imposter syndrome from the outer consumption.
Additionally, this applies to what we put out. What if every time you wanted to share a thought on social media or go external, you brought it in? Instead of turning to google, sit with yourself and listen. Look within for answers; what do we have to offer to ourselves? It’s time to discover our own inner pathway. Use silence as a seed being planted and see what blooms and what possibilities could exist. Now, this isn’t about completely cutting off and severing all ties to the outside world or the collective, it’s more about creating new boundaries and creating an inner world for yourself. This practice is not just for ourselves, but for the collective as we will become the beacon of light for others. You see, when we go inward, we illuminate, and the collective receives gifts from our illumination. We become a compass for the unknown.
Lastly, I want to touch on the imagery of The Hermit. There’s an element quite special and rare within Pamela Coleman Smith’s deck — there’s snow! Only one other card in the deck depicts snow, the 5 of Pentacles. As The Hermit represents the unseen and unknown, what exists that is currently unseen in the snow? What are you willing to lose in order to find yourself? What potential gems lie beneath the most difficult of terrains if you’re just willing to dig? You can’t progress further on this journey until you know learn this solitude, and the light and dark that come with it. Embrace the impossibility of having a wealth of knowledge, but also knowing nothing at the same time. Through this practice and embodiment of The Hermit, your path will be revealed.
To get started on your path with The Hermit, are you being called to take a pause from social media consumption for a few hours today? What does it look like to experience silence today? What do you think is waiting for you? What are you wishing for in The Hermit?
Allow your lantern to illuminate, keep you warm and guide you close to what you want to find.
xoxo, meg
